Hugh Raffles is Director of GIDEST and Professor of Anthropology at The New School for Social Research and Eugene Lang College.
HUGH RAFFLES is Director and Senior Fellow of GIDEST and Professor of Anthropology at The New School for Social Research and Eugene Lang College. His work is a sustained ethnographic exploration of relations between humans, animals, and things.
Hugh is the author of three books, In Amazonia: A Natural History (Princeton, 2002), Insectopedia (Pantheon, 2010), and The Book of Unconformities: Speculations on Lost Time (Pantheon, 2020). His essays have appeared in a wide variety of venues, including Granta, Public Culture, Cultural Anthropology, the New York Times, Cabinet, Orion, and The New York Review of Books. Among other honors, he was a recipient of a Whiting Writers’ Award for Nonfiction and a 2023 Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
