Transubstantiation
Writer and critic Lucy Sante will be discussing her work in progress, Transubstantiation, an account less of her gender transition than of the many forces in her life that caused her to repress her gender dysphoria for nearly sixty years. The book reviews her entire life employing this new lens, showing it in a completely new light. It is an inventory of doubts, fears, contradictions, compromises, puzzles, and speculations.
Lucy Sante’s books include Low Life: Lures and Snares of Old New York (1991), The Factory of Facts (1998), Kill All Your Darlings: Pieces 1990-2005 (2007), The Other Paris (2015), Maybe the People Would Be the Times (2020), and most recently Nineteen Reservoirs (2022). Her awards include a Whiting Writers Award, an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Grammy (for album notes), an Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography, and Guggenheim and Cullman fellowships. She recently retired after 23 years as Visiting Professor of Writing and the History of Photography at Bard College.
