WALK TO WORK

For his GIDEST seminar, artist Matthew Jensen will discuss his how his projects, exploring and celebrating local landscapes, come together through a combination of historical research, walking, photography and collecting. His current project, The Forest Between, will bring attention to New York City’s street trees and the community stewards who care for neighborhood landscapes. Past projects exploring New York City area parks and landscapes will be presented as context to this forthcoming work.

Matthew is a 2018-19 GIDEST Fellow and part-time Assistant Professor at Parsons School of Design. He received his B.A. in political science and fine art from Rice University and his M.F.A. from the University of Connecticut. Over the past ten years Matthew has developed an interdisciplinary practice that combines walking, collecting, photography, mapping and extensive research. His projects are designed to entail rigorous explorations of a site, and that experience is always essential to the final works.
