FROM THE IMAGINARY TO THE REAL
In her GIDEST seminar, Joan Jonas will be presenting later work, beginning with The Shape, the Scent, the Feel of Things (2004-2007), and ending with her most recent piece, Stream or River Flight or Pattern (2016-2017), discussing connections between the works and the sources on which she drew in creating them. She will also touch on her relationship to projection-as-technology, literary sources, and the present-day state of the environment.
A pioneering video and performance artist, sculptor, and visual artist, Joan Jonas has influenced generations of video performance art. She is the recipient of multiple awards for her contributions to contemporary art, including the American Film Institute’s Maya Deren Award for Video, the Hyogo Prefecture Museum of Modern Art Prize at the Tokyo International Video Art Festival, and the Polaroid Award for Video. In 2009, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Joan has performed The Shape, the Scent, the Feel of Things at Dia:Beacon (2006), the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (2008), and more recently, she has also performed at Performa 13 (2013) and Art Night (2016).
